Robot Vending Machine

Perfect for adding some adventure to snack time!

At the childcare center that I work at, the kids use this robot to serve snack.  The children line up, ask the robot for their snack item "One brownie, please!" and out comes a gloved hand, from the mouth of the robot, with just the item that they ordered.

Robot Vending Machine

You will need:

A large box, big enough for one or two children to crouch inside
Tin foil
Packing tape
Adult scissors, to be used under supervision
Any items of decoration you choose to use
Latex gloves

Advance Preparation:

Aside from gathering the materials, none!

Instructions:

1. Draw the face and secret opening on the back of the robot.  The opening is used to hand fresh snacks to the kids.  Keep in mind that it gets hot inside a robot, so give them plenty of opportunities to air out!

2. Cut out all the holes that you have made.  We used a large scissor, so that the kids could work on it (they are in grade three), but an exact o-knife would work even better if this step is up to the adults.

3. Cover the box in tin foil.  Make sure to cover every foil edge to prevent any ripping.  Tape the edges of every hole you make, again to prevent ripping.

4. Decorate the robot however you want.  Ours has an apron, to protect himself while he cooks, and he also has a chef's hat, not shown above!

5. Slap on some gloves to prevent germs from spreading between children during food distribution (these are for the kids inside the robot).  If you are handing out something sticky, make sure the portions are wrapped individually, so that they make their way back to the table without ending up in pieces on the floor!

All done!

Tip: we had about 15 children coming up to the robot, so we decided to dismiss them by table so that the line stayed orderly.

Run time: approx. 60 min.  A great after-lunch activity!
